4 Tips To Make The Holidays More Memorable for Children

Holidays have always been magical for children. Aside from the fact that there’s no school during the holiday season, they also get to do loads of fun stuff, eat good food and receive a ton of presents. In fact, some of your best childhood memories can be traced back to holiday festivities—the food, the traditions, the fun, and most of all the family.

However, things don’t always go as perfectly as planned. Sometimes, children can get into a terrible mood during holiday season. Some would get into fights with their siblings, might get sick, or would simply not be in a very festive mood during that time. In case that happens, here are some of the things that you can do to make the holidays more memorable for children:

4 Tips To Make The Holidays More Memorable for Children

1. Let the Children Help Out:

Getting the kids involved in holiday preparations is actually key to making it a more meaningful and memorable occasion for the entire family. Children may be little but there are actually a lot of stuff that they can do to help out. Putting up decors is one unforgettable activity for kids. You can allow them to play with their own imagination and use their creativity. You can also let children help out in the kitchen. Baking Christmas cookies or making holiday goodies are also a great source of good memories.

2. Create or Keep Family Traditions or Routines:

Holiday traditions help create beautiful memories for your kids to look back on when they are all grown up. For instance, gather the kids on Christmas Eve to make holiday cookies or a gingerbread house. Give each one a gingerbread house to decorate and let their imagination go. During the Christmas Eve dinner, the whole family can gather around drinking hot chocolates while enjoying the treats the kids made. When they grow up, they will have fond memories to tell their kids, which they can also carry on with their own family.

3. Volunteering and Helping Others:

The holiday season is also a perfect opportunity to teach children the value of sharing and generosity. Nothing makes the holidays more memorable than having your children experience the joy of sharing. This doesn’t have to be a big gesture and you don’t really have to spend money. It can be as simple as helping them donate old toys, books, and clothes to less fortunate children. Your time is the ultimate gift in volunteering.  You and your family can volunteer to give out food in local shelters. These simple acts do not only make the holidays memorable for children, it teaches them values that they will be carry for the rest of their lives.

4. Gifts:

The holidays are also all about gifts—giving and receiving them. Note however, that you have to be very careful when giving your kids their holiday presents. Being too extravagant could actually make them feel entitled to big things. Let them get used to appreciating even the simplest of gifts. Also, put emphasis on the value of giving and not just receiving gifts. Guide them in choosing their own presents for other members of the family and their friends if they have the chance. You can help them save up some money for their holiday presents. You can also help them make the presents that they’re going to give out. Holidays become more meaningful when they are not centered on one’s self but are shared with others.
